![]() After Wordsworth, its prevalent subject was the poet's own subjectivity… and so a new poetry was born. Wordsworth loved and drew inspiration from this landscape of the Lake District, his home. Here Wordsworth wrote many of his most famous poems. As the literary critics Harold Bloom and Lionel Trilling put it, "Before Wordsworth, poetry had a subject. Dove Cottage was home to the Romantic poet William Wordsworth (1770-1850) and his family for 8 ½ years (1799-1808). It was almost as if he had discovered a whole new dimension of human beings' inner life, a kind of terra incognita which he had decided to explore and depict in as much detail as possible. In this case, the word 'red' and 'blue' do not rhyme. ![]() The lines that rhyme with each other share a letter, and the letters are assigned in alphabetical order. Most of the time, the rhyme scheme is described by assigning letters to each line. But the themes that run through Wordsworth’s poetry, and the language and imagery he uses. A rhyme scheme is a pattern of rhymes at the end of a poem or song. Some of Wordsworth's contemporaries accused him of gross egotism, but the poem (and Wordsworth's work in general) was really just the expression of a new kind of subjectivity. Wordsworth’s monumental poetic legacy rests on a large number of important poems, varying in length and weight from the short, simple lyrics of the 1790 s to the vast expanses of The Prelude, thirteen books long in its 1808 edition. The poem also makes much of the work of memory, a theme explored as well in the Ode: Intimations of Immortality from Recollections of Early Childhood. But over hundreds of pages of blank verse, Wordsworth describes his childhood and youth in intricate detail, describing all of his formative experiences-most notably, all of his significant encounters with nature. to a Young Lady Lines written while sailing in a Boat at Evening Remembrance of Collins Descriptive Sketches Guilt and Sorrow or, Incidents upon Salisbury Plain Lines left upon a Seat in a Yew-tree The Borderers. The Prelude constitutes the most significant English expression of the Romantic discovery of the self as a topic for art and literature. A lover of nature, his poetry abounds with images of lambs, flowers in full bloom, windswept crags and woodland. Wordsworth's major work is a massive autobiographical poem called The Prelude, which explored "the growth of a poet's mind." The only previous poems of a similar length had been epics like Paradise Lost or The Fairie Queen, which told long and convoluted stories. It is 250 years since the birth of the great English poet William Wordsworth.
